Plavání je typickým olympijským sportem a tudíž je tradiční součástí programu SO. Plavání bylo do ČHSO zařazeno od počátku. V současné době je registrováno 95 sportovních klubů. Výraznější jsou plavecká střediska v Praze, Zlíně a Ostravě. Soutěží se dle mezinárodních pravidel a jsou zařazovány veškeré disciplíny (prsa, volný způsob, znak, motýlek) v distancích od 25 m do 800 m, včetně štafet, s drobnými úpravami pro start. Pravidlo bezpečnosti SO povoluje konat soutěže pouze v „krátkých“ bazénech – 25 m. Z plaveckých sportů nejsou doporučovány skoky do vody z vyššího prkna než 1 m, naopak na světových hrách 2015 se soutěžilo v dálkovém plavání (3 a 5 km) na otevřené vodní ploše. Výpravy ČHSO na evropské a světové soutěže čítají (obdobně jako v atletice) 3-4 muže a 3-4 ženy. Plavání patří k oblíbeným, ale i úspěšným sportům v ČHSO. Díky programům plavecké gramotnosti většina sportovců ČHSO i v jiných sportech umí plavat.
Přizpůsobené plavecké sporty byly začleněny do ČHSO v roce 2000.
Ředitelkami sportu se střídaly Dagmar Dědková a Jana Boubínová, která v této pozici pracuje dosud.
